Fans of the CBS crime drama, ‘Criminal Minds’ were stunned when it was announced that ‘Hotch’ had been suddenly fired from the show.

Gibson was fired last month after an incident with one of the producers. Rumours spread as to what exactly happen, but in a new interview with PEOPLE, Gibson details exactly what happened.

He said, “I feel like it took years to make a good reputation and a minute to damage it.”

He continued, “We were shooting a scene late one night when I went to Virgil [Williams] and told him there was a line that I thought contradicted an earlier line.” “He said, ‘Sorry, it’s necessary, and I absolutely have to have it.’”

Then things escalated, “he came into that room and started coming towards me. As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg…If I hadn’t moved, he would have run into me. We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over. We shot the scene, I went home, and I never got to go back.”

Gibson also addressed rumours that he and co-star Shemar Moore did not get along, “Shemar and I did have disagreements early on. People work differently and have different priorities, but we are like brothers and worked through it…I was so happy to direct the three-episode arc that was written to send him off, with hugs and kisses [at the end of last season].”

Gibson says he feels as though the show are trying to completely erase everything he’s done, “It seems like they’re trying to erase me from the show, that hurts. My pride and reputation are hurt, but in the end I know the good work is what people will remember.”

Season 12 of Criminal Minds will premiere this week, (September 28th); Gibson will appear in the first two episodes.
