“Petty Parkinson”.

That was one of my nicknames back in high school ((admittedly that I created for myself). If you did something to me, whether it was something big, or small, you could count on me getting back at you in some way shape or form.

Now, as I get older and become umm, more mature, I’d like to believe that I’ve changed.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy some good old fashioned petty behaviour now and then and right now, at least in Hip-Hop, there is no pettier person than one Aubrey Drake Graham.

I’m not even sure where to begin with this, but why not let’s start with the most recent incident.

So over the years, rapper Pusha T has taken some shots at Drake (most of them relatively subtle ones), often referring to the fact that he believes Drake doesn’t write his own raps (a common theme among Drake’s rap beefs).

Well, back in 2016 Drake responded by appearing to mock Pusha T’s past as a drug dealer on the record, “Two Birds, One Stone”,

“But really it’s you with all the drug dealer stories / That’s gotta stop, though / You made a couple chops and now you think you Chapo / If you ask me though, you ain’t lining the trunk with kilos.”

Well, the Hip-Hop world got a response from the G.O.O.D Music rapper on Friday with the release of his new album, Daytona and the track, “Infrared” in which Pusha appears to directly target Drake with these bars,

“Your hooks did it/The lyrics pennin’ equals to Trump’s winnin’/The bigger question is how the Russians did it/It was written like Nas but it came from Quentin.”

A very clear reference to Quentin Miller, the man who has been rumoured to write many of Drake’s rhymes (this at least according to Meek Mill and other sources, more on that later)

Well, in true petty form, Drake wasted NO time responding to Pusha T with the release of “Duppy Freestyle” in which he goes directly at Pusha T and Kanye West.

Drake spits, “So if you rebuke me for working with someone else on a couple of Vs / What do you really think of the n—- that’s making your beats? “Tell ‘Ye we got an invoice comin’ to you / Considering we just sold another 20 for you.”

Having undoubtedly heard the freestyle, Pusha would go on Twitter to tell Drake to send that invoice, and once again in the pettiest of fashion, Drake did just that…

Damn Drake.

But really, it doesn’t even end there.

Let’s go back to 2015, when Meek Mill called out Drake after taking issue for being compared to Drake.

In a since deleted tweet Meek wrote, “Stop comparing drake to me too…. He don’t write his own raps! That’s why he ain’t tweet my album because we found out! The whole game know forreal they scared to tell the truth! I can’t wait tok these guys and sit back and act like they don’t know!”

This would lead to one of the coldest, most savage responses that I’ve seen in Hip-Hop since Jay-Z’s “Takeover” and Nas’ “Ether”, as Drake would release two records, “Charged Up” (which served as a warning shot to Meek) and then the absolute blow, which is the now infamous diss record, “Back to Back”.

With lyrics like, “Is that a world tour or your girls tour?” (referring to Meek going on tour with his then-girlfriend Nicki Minaj).

Drake took it another step, by essentially performing a slideshow of Meek Mill memes, disses at his annual OVO Fest here in Toronto…

So very petty.

I will say this, for all of his petty ways, there have been times I thought Drizzy may have taken it a little bit too far.

On the aforementioned “Two Birds, One Stone” record, Drake took a jab at rapper Kid Cudi by saying (via Hot New Hip-Hop),

“You were the man on the moon / Now you just go through your phases / Life of the angry and famous / Rap like I know I’m the greatest / Then give you the tropical flavors / Still never been on hiatus / You stay xanned and perked up / So when reality set in you don’t gotta face it / I’m down 200 in Vegas but winning life on a daily basis / It seems like nobody wants to stay in my good graces / I’m like a real estate agent, putting you all in your places / Look what happens soon as you talk to me crazy / Is you crazy?”

The one issue with this is the diss came shortly after Kid Cudi had checked himself into rehab for depression, so the timing just felt off.

Nonetheless, when you’re perceived to be at the top of the rap game, you become a target, and no one has seemed more prepared to clap back than Drake, and whether it’s very obvious and direct jabs, or subtle ones, I love it.”

You make us petty people proud Drizzy.
