Mark Zuckerberg is now a certified matchmaker!

As of today, Facebook launched ‘Facebook Dating’ in both Canada and Thailand.  As PEOPLE explains, “In order to use the new online dating service, Facebook users will be tasked with creating a new profile that will exist separately from the one that all of your friends and family can see. And don’t worry, Facebook Dating won’t share your activities to yours or anybody else’s Facebook profile or News Feeds.”

So how does the app work? Facebook Dating will only suggest matches based on things you do on Facebook, your preferences and interests.  The app won’t make connections with your friends on Facebook or anyone you have previously blocked.

Here are some things to know about the new dating app:

  • You must be 18 years and older.
  • You will be able to block and/or hide users (including specific friends)
  • It’s text ONLY (so no pictures of your yee-haw)
  • Dating chats will be separate from Messenger

How to setup Facebook Dating:

  • From your profile, click on the ‘heart icon’
  • You will then enter ‘Dating Home’
  • From there, set up your dating profile (separate from your Facebook page)

Technical program manager for Facebook Dating explained, “We’ve seen on Facebook that people have been using it to connect with friends and make new ones. And we started seeing actually that people were using it to form meaningful romantic relationships, which is really cool, and we’ve seen that over 200 million people listed themselves as single on their Facebook relationship status and we so thought that this would be a great opportunity for us to help people.”

Happy matching!
