Digital security is more important now than it ever has been. So picking a password that is both easy to remember and hard to crack is important.

According to Gizmodo, the top passwords of 2018 were these:

  • 123456.
  • password.
  • 123456789.
  • 12345678.
  • 12345.

So, easy to remember? Yes. Hard to crack? No. So it might be hard to believe that one of the most common passwords that people use is “ji32k7au4a83”. At first glance it seems like it’s nothing more than a jumble of random letters and numbers. Hard to crack? Yes. Easy to remember? HECK NO!! So why would this password even be on any list as one of the most popular passwords? Have I Been Pwned? is a website that helps you figure out if your email account has been breached. They revealed that not only is “ji32k7au4a83” a common password, it popped up more than 140 times in their searches.

So let’s figure out why. It actually turns out that “ji32k7au4a83” is more than just what happens when you hit your head on your keyboard. It spells out “My Password” on a Mandarin Chinese keyboard.

So a great password in English, not such a great one in Mandarin Chinese. However, we can all admit to at one time having a password like “12345” for something.
