The Weeknd Is Getting Sued Over 'In The Night'

Looks like The Weeknd has caught himself into a web of legal trouble.

It was announced that The Weeknd is being sued over his song ‘A Lonely Night’ which is off of his Starboy album.  Three British songwriters by the names of Brian Clover, Scott McCulloch and William Smith have filed a complaint with the Central District of California because they claim  their song ‘I Need to Love’ sounds A LOT like ‘A Lonely Night.’

As Billboard states, “The trio has filed the lawsuit for “unspecified damages” against The Weeknd, Universal Music, Warner Bros. Music Corp., among others. Back in 2008, Big Life Music, who owned the rights to “I Need Love,” was acquired by Universal Music Publishing Group.  Court documents state that Universal informed the plaintiffs in 2016 that their songs had not been exploited and would relinquish the rights to their music going forward. It wasn’t until weeks after Starboy’s release that Clover heard the similarities between The Weeknd’s track and his work while shopping at Topman, which spurred the group to begin taking legal action.”

According to the lawsuit documents, it reads, “In 2004 and 2005, the British artists pitched their song to various artists around the world.  A division of Universal Music bought the rights to the song in 2008.”  Unfortunately for Abel, this isn’t the first time he’s been sued over songs.  Abel fought in court over the name ‘Starboy’ and to trademark his name followed by another suit when a comic book writer made accusations against The Weeknd with his collaboration with Marvel Comics.
