Selena Gomez has spoken out to defend the controversial show ’13 Reasons Why.’ The Netflix series that follows the journey of high school student Hannah Baker and her suicide, took off this year but faced harsh backlash when viewers criticized the show for glorifying suicide.

“The content is complicated, it’s dark and it has moments that are honestly really hard to swallow. I understood that we were going into something that is difficult, but these kids today are so exposed to things that I would never even have comprehended when I was eight,” the Bad Liar singer said during a radio interview on Monday. “My cousin teaches third grade and they’re doing things and saying things that I couldn’t even fathom. I feel like if this is what we are going to talk about, we might as well do it in a way that’s going to be honest, it’s going to be real, and it stays true to the book.”

As executive producer of ’13 Reasons Why,’ this isn’t the first time Gomez has commented on the show’s tough issues. Last month, she told the Associated Press, “We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing and I’m overwhelmed, very proud of it.”

Netflix has confirmed in a statement that there will be a second season of the show that “picks up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.” Selena also revealed more details about the second season, “In season 2 we’re going to answer a lot of questions, and a lot of resolution with the characters is going to come. We go into the resolution of where these characters are going. I was freaking out about where they were going because it was really encouraging and empowering. We’re going to take a little inspiration from the first, and bring it into the second.”
