John Legend’s music, personality and of all things his love for his family and his beliefs spread like wildfire when he brought his Darkness And Light tour to Toronto at Budweiser Stage tonight.

Please note: If what you read below seems extra full of love and emotion keep in mind.. I just listened to the angelic voice and lyrics of John Legend for two hours and I think it may have made an impact.

And yes… I said two hours, because that is how much love John Legend gave to Toronto and I think everyone would have been okay with him performing hours more.

As much as I love the concert scene there are usually a few instances when you come across an upset fellow concert-goer. Especially when everyone is exiting after the show, there is usually a rush to get to the car or transit in which you may come across some more negative attitudes.

But I swear to you, there was not a single angry person leaving the show tonight. I even bumped into somebody and we both just laughed, smiled and said, “no worries.”

To say John Legend had no part in the positive atmosphere of the night would be a lie. His genuity and confidence is empowering. He sang about his passion for activism, his wife, his daughter and of course love. I think it’s unanimous that nothing beats a John Legend love song. No voting necessary.

As it was getting closer to 9PM, the rumoured time Legend would hit the stage, fans were flooding through the gates and the venue was packed. But, like I said, with the friendliest crowd you could experience.

He opened with I Know Better off of his latest album which shares the same name as his tour; Darkness And Light. One of the first of his 25-song setlist was Love Me Now. This song immediately brought his fans together singing along and dancing. It’s an overwhelming feeling you get, being one of thousands of people who are singing together with an incredible talent on stage. However, Love Me Now was just the beginning of a great show to come.

Several times during Legend’s show he mentioned his family, especially his absolutely adorable one year old daughter. The amount of love this man has for his wife and child is beautiful and his lyrics even more so. I truly admire the man because of tonight’s show.

There were a few key details to the show that made it unique. Legend mentioned how it is Father’s Day tomorrow and I think this is why we heard so much about his daughter, Luna Legend tonight.

There were also these huge mobile screens that made-up his backdrop which often showed various home videos of his family and others. It added an effect to his performances that made his lyrics come to life.

Another time these screens were incorporated into the show was during his songs about activism, human rights and fighting for what is right. He told the crowd how regardless of how long you have to march for the same thing… just keep marching. The message of these songs like Save The Night and Glory were empowering and the way he delivered them to us was incredibly entertaining.

Legend covered a few great songs such as Wake Up Everybody by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and my personal favourite song of the night God Only Knows by The Beach Boys.

As the night came to a close and John Legend sent his love and good wishes to Toronto… everyone was thinking the same thing: “What about All Of Me?”

Everyone remained seated and moments later John Legend was sitting at his grand piano and the background became starry as the familiar notes filled the air. Remember that moment I wrote about above and the overwhelming feeling you get when a huge crowd sings together. Well let’s just say I had ‘all the feels’ during All Of Me.

Listen below and you’ll understand me.
