New York has been overtaken by calorie counting bagel ruiners. A trend that has been brewing for a while in NYC is finally pushing Bagel shop owners over the edge. New Yorkers are, or asking bagel shop owners to, scoop out parts of the inside of their bagel, ruining the classic New York bagel. The travesty.

Scooping out the inside of your bagel has become a widespread trend in New York City, the New York Post wrote back in 2010, “It’s called ‘scooped out,’ and it’s the disfigured version of the Jewish delicacy that is quickly becoming the norm among New Yorkers — and driving bagel purists and purveyors bonkers.” A local bagel owner elaborated on the important world issue, “They’re all making me nuts with the scooping! Ninety percent of my customers order it like that and it drives me absolutely crazy. But you have to give them what they want.”

However, these health conscious bagel eaters may not be helping themselves a whole bunch calories. “You’re saving maximum 75 calories by scooping it out,” says nutritionist Marissa Lippert. “That’s about as the same calories as an apple.”

There is some sanity in the city however. Lisa Rosenberg, a 27-year-old graphic designer living in Brooklyn, told the New York Post, “It was the moment I realized my ex was a monster. Even watching someone eating [a scooped-out bagel] is completely repulsive.” Lisa is beacon of hope in these dark times. She may not be the hero we need, but she’s the one we deserve.
