In the age of social media instant gratification, this month’s One To Watch Adam Shomer, better known as A-SHO, is a rare breed—an artist who wants to inspire his listeners and create meaningful relationships. Despite being born and raised in a Montreal musical household, A-SHO didn’t plan on music as a career at first. He attended university in Boston on a basketball scholarship, and while also majoring in environmental engineering, he ended up auditioning to his school’s a capella group as a beatboxer, where he showcased his singing chops.

Equally influenced by R&B hitmakers including Usher, The Weeknd, Miguel and old-school soul acts like Seal and Earth, Wind & Fire, A-SHO began writing and recording music that combined honest songwriting against groovy, house-influenced beats. He compares his sound to that of collaborations such as Disclosure & Sam Smith, Daft Punk & The Weeknd and Jack Ü & Justin Bieber.  His breakout smash hit, ‘On My Way’, a track created with UK-based producer XYOP, racked up five million streams on Spotify.

Since returning to his hometown of Montreal, A-SHO released a handful of successful singles on a Quebec City indie label, Higher Reign and has also performed at festivals including Canadian Music Week, Festival d’ete de Quebec, and Villa Paradizo.

Now signed to Sony Music Entertainment Canada, his latest single ‘Feel Something’ marks an exciting new chapter for the dance-pop singer-songwriter. Co-produced and written with David A in the Montreal DJ and producer’s studio, it’s his most personal and relatable work to date, without sacrificing the catchy hooks he’s become known for. Explaining the song’s darker lyrics which conjures up images of a late night rendezvous with a lover, A-SHO says, “Today an Instagram notification is more important than an actual conversation.” He recommends listening to ‘Feel Something’ while driving home after a night out; its upbeat house tempo and shimmering layers of synths make it perfect for club dance floors or bedroom make out sessions.
