That Chevy Chase was difficult to work with on the set of Community comes as a surprise to… no one, but this time, it was at the expense of hip-hop artist extraordinaire Donald Glover and it was racially-charged, which really sucks.

In a recent interview with The New YorkerGlover revealed the brutally mean way Chase treated him on the reg during production of the beloved sitcom. According to Glover, Chase consistently tried to sabotage Glover’s acting by making racist “jokes” to and about him in-between takes, and Chase allegedly once told Glover, “people think you’re funnier because you’re black.”

And yet, somehow, Glover was resilient enough to shake it off. Community creator Dan Harmon told The New Yorker that, after a long night of Chase’s offensive behaviour, he apologized to Glover and Glover said, “I don’t even worry about it.”

“Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off,” Harmon said.

Glover wasn’t just saying that—he really didn’t let Chase bother him. “I just saw Chevy as fighting time—a true artist has to be O.K. with his reign being over,” Glover told The New Yorker. “I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere—he’s almost too human.”

The New Yorker reached out to Chase for comment, to which he replied, “I am saddened to hear that Donald perceived me in that light.”

Sorry, Chase. You’re officially not welcome at the Greendale 10-year reunion (a.k.a. the movie we literally all want NEED).
