Since his return to Twitter last month, Kanye West has not. shut. up.

Among other things, West gave us a glimpse at the inside of he and Kim Kardashian’s stark Hidden Hills home, he aligned himself politically with U.S. President Donald Trump and he shared screenshots of texts from famous friends—like John Legend and Chance the Rapper—making sure he’s OK.

Until yesterday, West’s 280 character philosophical musings were kind of interesting, and most people assumed his tweet storms were his way of promoting his new projects… But then he went to TMZ.

On the May 1 episode of TMZ Live, in conversation with Candace Owens, West said, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years… 400 years?! That sounds like a choice.” That’s when sh-t hit the fan.

Angered by the controversial statements, TMZ employee Van Lathan responded. “While you are making music and being an artist and living the life that you’ve earned by being a genius, the rest of us in society have to deal with these threats to our lives,” Lathan said. “We have to deal with the marginalization that’s come from the 400 years of slavery that you said for our people was a choice.”

Lathan added, “Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled, and brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something to me, that’s not real.”
That evening, West tweeted that he was wrongly attacked for his statements, adding that, “We can’t be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought It was just an idea,” the rapper tweeted.

Also in conversation with TMZ, West shared that he had liposuction, for which he was prescribed opioids. “I had plastic surgery because I was trying to look good for y’all. Didn’t want y’all to call me fat, so I got liposuction. And they gave me opioids.”

Following the surgery in November 2016, Kanye West was hospitalized after a breakdown which he says was caused by personal and professional stress, exacerbated by the October 2016 robbery of his wife in Paris. West said he would prefer to think of his breakdown as a breakthrough, saying, “There was elements about going to the hospital and having a breakdown—or a breakthrough—that was fire,” West said. “It was incredible, the feeling.”
