Ashley Madison confirms they have been hacked, but claim they have purged the information from the web!!

Dating website Ashley Madison, which caters to people in relationships looking to have an affair, was very publicly hacked yesterday. The hackers, who call themselves “The Impact Team” released a sample of the information they had stolen and a manifesto demanding the site, and its sister site Cougarlife, be taken offline.

The reason for their attacks, contrary to popular belief, was not over the nature of the site, but because of the way they were operating. Ashley Madison offered an option that allowed users to have all of their information deleted from the site, for a one time fee of $19. What users didn’t know, was that the site was stilling holding onto their credit card and address information, even after they paid the $19.

The Impact Team decided to steal the information of these 37-million users and use it as ransom to bring the site down. Unfortunately for them, the owners of Ashley Madison were able to purge all of the stolen information from the web, or at least that is what they now claim. Either way, the site still remains online, and we will have to wait and see if this is where the Ashley Madison debacle ends.
